When independent engineering advice matters
Internal engineering teams know their assets better than any outsider ever will. What they often lack is time, distance, or exposure to how the same problem has been solved elsewhere. Independent advice is most valuable in a narrow set of situations: when a decision is expensive to reverse, when the internal view is genuinely divided, when a technology is unfamiliar, or when a third party — a partner, a regulator, a lender, an insurer — needs assurance that is visibly impartial.
We work alongside engineering, operations and commercial teams rather than in place of them. The objective is a clear, defensible recommendation the client can act on and stand behind, not a report that restates the question.

Engineering assessments and design review
Independent review of designs, specifications and engineering assumptions before they are committed to capital. This includes examining whether the design basis still reflects current operating conditions, whether assumptions carried over from earlier projects remain valid, and where residual technical risk actually sits.
Technology qualification programmes
New or modified technology usually fails on qualification, not on the underlying engineering. We help structure qualification so it answers the questions that matter to the people who must approve deployment — defining acceptance criteria up front, sequencing testing to retire the largest uncertainties first, and making sure evidence generated in a trial will actually satisfy the stage gate it is intended for.
Technical due diligence
Structured technical assessment of an asset, product line or technology on behalf of a buyer, investor or partner. The work concentrates on the questions that change valuation or deal structure: the true maturity of the technology, the condition and remaining life of equipment, the credibility of performance claims, and the liabilities a buyer would be assuming.
Project and operational advisory
Support on specific engineering challenges as they arise — reviewing an intervention plan, providing a second opinion on a persistent operational problem, or advising on how to evaluate competing technical proposals from vendors.
A note on scope. Not every question needs a full study. A significant share of the value in independent advisory comes from correctly sizing the work — establishing quickly whether a question can be closed out in a short review or genuinely warrants a detailed programme.
How an engagement typically works
- Framing. Establish the actual decision to be made, who must approve it, and what evidence they will find convincing.
- Review. Examine the technical basis — documentation, data, prior studies, and where useful, direct discussion with the engineers closest to the work.
- Assessment. Identify the material technical risks, separate the ones that can be engineered out from the ones that must be accepted and managed.
- Recommendation. A clear position with the reasoning behind it, written so a non-specialist decision-maker can follow the argument.
- Support through decision. Remaining available while the recommendation is reviewed internally, and adjusting if new information emerges.

The common thread is technical complexity combined with meaningful commercial consequence — environments where getting the engineering right and getting the decision right are not quite the same problem.
Working with a small independent practice
A smaller advisory firm brings a specific set of trade-offs. There is no bench to staff, so the person assessing the problem is the person you spoke to. Engagements can be scoped tightly and started quickly. Advice is not shaped by an incentive to sell downstream implementation work, since we do not provide it. For very large, multi-discipline programmes a major consultancy may genuinely be the better fit, and we will say so.
